7 Steps in Choosing a Right Career

I am not here talking about any particular career neither I am forcing any one to be a part of the crowd. But when time comes in our life to choose something as our career then we really need the HELP of an expert!

Help of Career Counsellor

It must be known to a student that why they want to opt a certain career. This would help them to frame appropriate set of questions that can be answered by the career counsellor. A career counsellor is the authorized person for conducting or interpreting an aptitude test. They help to understand a student’s personality by using their psychological insights. Students and parents are also updated by them about the upcoming career trends and specialisation.

What Questions you should ask

General questions which are asked by any student to their career councillor are “I am unable to decide which career is right for me or in which I’ll be good at?”, “I know there is broad career goal for me, but when it comes to specialising i need the guidance.”, “I have been offered for admission from various colleges, but how to choose which one is appropriate for me?”. A student requires answer of all these queries from their career councillor during their decision-making journey.

Students must note down all the points they want to discuss with the career councillor before their meeting. According to me these are some point which they should keep in mind.

Interests

Students must jot down their interests, hobbies and achievements on apiece of paper and carry it along them while attending the counsellor. They must also make record of their extra curricular achievements, prizes and certificates received by them in school and college. As this would help the counsellor to find out their field of interest.

Priorities

The most common values of today are money, status and prestige. These are considered as given students must dare to think beyond it. They want a diverse work profile or a routine. They want people around them or prefer to work alone. These little bit of preparations before the counselling can facilitate the process of guidance.

Research

Students must have a little knowledge about the subject that they are hoping to seek information on. Say, if one have heard about forensic science, then there must be a fair idea of what it actually is.

Be calm

During counselling, many sessions are being wasted by the students as they spent most of the time expressing their anxiety instead of asking appropriate questions. During the counselling process, having a set of questions can help to stay focussed.

At the session

A counselling session is a two-way process and it lasts usually for an hour. Here the expert comment about the career is kept by the counsellor and the counseled brings his knowledge and aspiration to the counsellor. If the prior research has been done, a person can get benefitted through this.
